Day Fifty-Four
Below are Jean's edits to Draft Three. I fixed them and then re-read the whole document making minor edits and formatting changes.
  • Because of the extensive changes, I’m not sure whether you still mention these texts.  I’d like you to keep them in somewhere since this was basically your lit review.
  • Was it published only in this newspaper, or was the article more widely distributed?  (I’m trying to gauge whether this one article might have had much impact. – if not, leave it out)
  • Unique means the onlyone of its kind, so you’re either unique or not.  Unique can’t be modified by especially.
  • At this point I think you’ve mentioned the resource multiple times and it’s becoming redundant. What part of this section is new?  Keep that and deleate the redundancies.

Day Fifty-Three

Today I stayed at home and fixed the Guide. I have pretty much everything I could hope to have. Although I'd like to find out who manages the Connections program. My third draft is complete! I sent it to Jean using Yousendit because the file is too large to email.

Saturday, May 21

Day Fifty-Two

Today I came into the office and reread the whole thing and added in the last of Kerry's edits. Ugh, I hate reading this thing. It's so long and boring, haha.

Monday, May 16

Day Fifty-One

I was planning on sending in my final draft to Jean today, but I postponed because I'm not done working on it. She said I need to send it to her on Sunday, May 21. Today I spent all night working on the Appendix lists Kerry suggested I make.

Here's what I have left to do before Sunday:
  • Elaborate on declining program, also NE program?
  • Works Cited: Add core competencies, make sure it’s formatted correctly, and footnotes
  • Fix Guide wording, how to talk about western and NE programs?
  • Number the figures
  • Fix other Kerry edits, differentiate between fact sheet and my guide
  • Format fact sheet into document
  • Reread
I also want to send the program managers the document to review one more time.

Sunday, May 15

Day Fifty

I got a ridiculous amount of work done on the Guide! I think it's almost done, although I have to think about how I want to handle the declining group. I also want to ask Kerry what she thinks would be a good way to word the titles of my figures. My document is now over 110 pages. I was supposed to hand in my final draft tomorrow, but I am going to ask Jean if I could keep it for a few more days.

Day Forty-Nine

So during the week, I sent my lit review to Jean. She said it's fine. And I asked Kerry to read my thesis. She had a lot of comments, which is great, but that means I have a lot of work to do... Today I came into the office to work on the text. Tomorrow I'm coming into the office to work on the Guide.

To do on text:
  • Ask Kerry: okay if clarify use of "front lines" in footnote? questionnaire? lower level?
  • Elaborate on declining program
  • Works Cited: Add core compentencies, make sure its formatted correctly, and footnotes
  • Get answer from AAM
  • Margins ok?
To do on guide:
  • Fix charts
  • Update info
  • Lists for appendix
  • Key findings?
  • Send to program managers
Footnote numbering will fix itself when I accept track changes.

Monday, May 9, 2011

Sunday, May 8

Day Forty-Eight

Today I went through the Intro, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2. Everything looks like it's in pretty good shape.  Although I didn't get to the Conclusion. This has to be done so Kerry can review it for me. Other details to fix: footnote numbering is off, add resources to Works Cited, is top margin correct?, send lit review to Jean for comments

Saturday, May 7

Day Forty-Seven

Today I worked on the lit review... it's pretty good, but I wonder if it's enough. I'm thinking about sending it to Jean on Monday so she can give me her opinion while I continue to work on the rest of the document.

Sunday, May 1

Day Forty-Six

My goal is to hand in my final draft on May 16th--two weeks and one day from today. I am working on my literature review today, which is the biggest obstacle I have left.

Friday, April 22, 2011

Friday, April 22

Day Forty-Five

Got comments back from Jean right away. The next big thing I have to work on is my literature review. Here's her email:

Hi Caitlin – Here’s your draft with some comments on it – but very few!  You’ve already noted for yourself the places that need either additional writing or revising.  Everything else is minor at this point.  In a few cases I added a note inside one of your comments – you’ll see it in bold italics.  Other than that all notes are in new comment boxes.

If you can finish those last few pieces that you already know about within the next few weeks, you’ll be good to go for graduation in June!

You’ve really done a fine job with the research and with writing this up as a very polished document.  You can be proud of the work you’ve done!

Let me know if you have any questions about the notes on here.  Great work!

Thursday, April 21

Day Forty-Four

Wrote the abstract and acknowledgements and reformatted the Guide to RMPs and sent Jean draft "one and a half."

Monday, April 18, 2011

Sunday, April 17

Day Forty-Three

I worked on rewriting the second chapter today. I am pleased with the work I got done on it and how it's coming out, although I didn't completely finish it.

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Saturday, April 16

Day Forty-Two

Today I worked on the Intro, Chapter One, and some of Chapter Two. I have a lot to do tomorrow!

Sunday, April 10, 2011

Sunday, April 10

Day Forty-One

I've compiled all the things I need to fix for the second draft and made a schedule. I told Jean I would give her my second draft on 4/18, which gives me 8 days. This schedule is for 6 days. Today is Day One.

Day One
·         First Chapter: This is a good example of a museum that saw a direct and clear benefit due to adding an RMP.  While outside the scope of your thesis, you might suggest that creating a method for tracking these benefits could be an area for further research.
·         First Chapter: NARM is the largest. Does this appear to make them more or less desirable for museums to join?  Is their list large or small; obscure or prestigious?
·         First Chapter: Whitney and Met. Do they each run their own, or is there one RMP that these two prestigious institutions belong to?
·         First Chapter: Why do some do no price point requirement? Do you want to explain briefly the rationale for the lower price point requirement?  I assume this means that museums such as the Whitney and MOMA do not participate in this RMP?
·         First Chapter: Better explain why museums would want to join two types of programs. So one museum might belong to several RMP programs?  If one has a high price point and another a low one, how would that benefit the museum?
·         First Chapter: Connections. Were you able to learn whether this complexity affects the extent to which the program is used? In other words, if people aren’t quite sure what benefit they’ll receive, does that make this benefit less attractive or less used?
·         First Chapter: Does the RMP manager typically charge participating museums for management, or is this done as part of the operating expenses of the managing organization?
·         Go through Form Analyses and add more specific examples.
·         Guide to RMPs: Reformat. Finish filling out.
·         Guide to RMPs: Send to managers to check.
Day Two
·         Second Chapter: For example, when a new museum is added to a reciprocal membership program, program managers can use the central source as a way to spread the word and ensure everyone updates their information accordingly. By “everyone,” do you mean other museums participating in that RMP?  So if I’m the Oshkosh Art Museum, I need to know when the Athens Art Museum has joined my RMP so my staff know to honor their membership, right?
·         Second Chapter: This incorrect information can mislead members and cause problems for them when they visit museums they believe to be reciprocal museums. So a museum member might look up ahead of time whether a particular museum is part of her home museum’s RMP, but that info could be wrong?
·         Second Chapter: They must know what programs the museum participates in, what museums are included in those programs, how reciprocal members can be identified, and what benefits reciprocal members receive. Did you ask about this in your survey?  Is it common for RMP information to be readily accessible to people at ticket desks/information desks etc.?  Or do they typically have to hunt for it?  This has been my experience when visiting museums out of Philly when I’ve asked whether they accept any of the memberships I have from home.  They typically have to call someone and don’t have the info at the front desk.
·         Second Chapter: First, the central, easily-accessible, and up-to-date information source about reciprocal membership programs that has been discussed throughout this thesis will make the information available. The way you’re referring to this, it sounds as if it actually exists.  Does it?  Or are you saying that it should be created?
·         Second Chapter: I think the most important thing you have to say is to set up the central information resource, but I wonder where you think it belongs – AAM?  On their website?  Should this be something that’s interactive, that each RMP manager would edit/update him or herself?  You can suggest one or more possible ways to set this up. Your recommendation about an RMP awareness day sounds less convincing.
·         Second Chapter: Other overarching organizations that currently run reciprocal membership programs for their members, such as the Association of Science-Technology Centers, can be looked at as models. Can you provide one or two sentences to explain what this model looks like?
·         Second Chapter: This tool will help ensure that busy staff people focus on this topic at least once per year. Who would decide what this date is, and who would publicize it?  Would this need to come from AAM?
Day Three
·         Conclusion: Instituting a central, easily-accessible, and up-to-date information source can have a positive impact on the museums that participate in them. I know this is really important to your thesis, but it’s not quite here in your paper yet.  Do you want to offer a template for what might be included in this database?  Is it a database? It’s not quite clear what you’re suggesting ought to be created.
·         Conclusion: Since this thesis is focused on laying the groundwork for a basic understanding of reciprocal membership programs, there are many more opportunities for research in the future. This is a good example of where it doesn’t sound like you’ve already started on one of your key suggestions.  You’ve done more than what you’re describing here.
·         Conclusion: Your conclusion should clarify what you found out, what your key recommendations are, and should make it clear that you’ve already started on establishing the central resource you propose – you just need a place for it to go and a method for gathering/updating the info.  You need a host!
Day Four
·         Introduction: When you first describe your surveys, you should indicate that your survey questions are available in Appendix A (or whatever is the right label), and summarize what you asked about for each survey.  What you asked is really important because it helps your reader to know what you were trying to find out, and what you would not have been able to find out.  If there are types of issues or questions that you thought about but deliberately left out, that you think a lot of readers might have questions about, you should mention them in the section where you explain the limitations of the study.
·         Introduction: So early in your paper, you need to state that in fact one of your results is the beginnings of creating a database (if that’s the right word for what you have) that you believe would be a benefit to the field and help to improve practices as you suggest at the end.
·         First Chapter: Concluding paragraphs-Your concluding paragraph should summarize the preceding discussion and highlight what you think are the key points from that section or chapter. Can you provide a better summary of the preceding section?  You might summarize key distinctions among RMPs, key benefits, etc. You can also provide a transition to Chapter 2.
Day Five
·         Introduction: Lit review-As I read through your lit review and your paper, it looks as if there is almost nothing written at all about museum memberships – you could certainly cite recent books and articles about changes in museum practice and explain that while many of them discuss membership, none focus on the particular issues you want to explore regarding RMPs.  Right now you have so little it doesn’t look as if you’ve actually done a search.  I’m sure you looked at a variety of sources in your search.  Summarize what areas of museum management they DO cover so it will be clear you’ve covered your bases.  The summary can be very brief, lumping a group of texts together under a general description of the kinds of things they do cover.
Day Six
·         Write abstract (less than 150 words) and AAAE abstract (700 characters).
·         Write acknowledgements.
·         Get rid of List of Tables and List of Figures or incorporate some into the document?
·         Separate sections of the introduction.

Day Forty

Jean gave me her edits on 3/30 and said she'd like my second draft 4/9-4/13. However, it's 4/8 and I haven't started yet. I stayed home from work today because I don't feel well. Maybe I will be able to get some work done today. Hopefully, I will be able to use this weekend and next weekend to get the second draft done and get it back to Jean on 4/18. I haven't worked on it yet because I feel like it's nowhere close to where I'd like it to be and I don't know where to start. But maybe instead of focusing on it being good, I just need to focus on getting it done.

Wednesday, March 30

Jean gave me her comments on my first draft today. There are more specific comments in the word doc, but here are her overall comments:

Hi Caitlin – Great work on this draft!  Of course I have comments, but you should feel good about what you’ve accomplished so far.  You’re well on your way to completion.

At this point in time you should be doing the following:
- make sure you’ve applied for graduation and to participate in Commencement.  I’m not sure ifyou can order your robes yet, but do that as soon as Drexel makes it available.  You’re going to finish!
- start working on filling the various holes you’ve left in the thesis document – I think you have most of them marked for yourself but check against the thesis manual to make sure nothing is left out and that you’ve used the correct format where indicated
- read these comments and the comments on the paper and start working on your revision.  If you can get your next draft back to me in 10 days to 2 weeks, that would be perfect.

Here are my general thoughts on what you have so far:

As I read your thesis, I didn’t realize how much you had actually compiled already, and that the resource you suggest in your paper ought to be created has in fact been started by you as part of your research for this paper.

So early in your paper, you need to state that in fact one of your results is the beginnings of creating a database (if that’s the right word for what you have) that you believe would be a benefit to the field and help to improve practices as you suggest at the end.  As I read the paper, I found I wasn’t expecting to find this huge resource at the end – it came as a surprise!

Likewise, when you first describe your surveys, you should indicate that your survey questions are available in Appendix A (or whatever is the right label), and summarize what you asked about for each survey.  What you asked is really important because it helps your reader to know what you were trying to find out, and what you would not have been able to find out.  If there are types of issues or questions that you thought about but deliberately left out, that you think a lot of readers might have questions about, you should mention them in the section where you explain the limitations of the study.

As I read through your lit review and your paper, it looks as if there is almost nothing written at all about museum memberships – you could certainly cite recent books and articles about changes in museum practice and explain that while many of them discuss membership, none focus on the particular issues you want to explore regarding RMPs.

Next – how to close out each section.  I know the thesis manual suggests you should write a concluding paragraph, but yours appear to move up to such a high level of generality as to not be useful.  Your concluding paragraph should summarize the preceding discussion and highlight what you think are the key points from that section or chapter.

Chapter Two – I have lots of detailed notes on this section on the draft – see notes.  ?  I think the most important thing you have to say is to set up the central information resource, but I wonder where you think it belongs – AAM?  On their website?  Should this be something that’s interactive, that each RMP manager would edit/update him or herself?  You can suggest one or more possible ways to set this up. Your recommendation about an RMP awareness day sounds less convicning – see my notes on this section as well.

Conclusion – Your conclusion should clarify what you found out, what your key recommendations are, and should make it clear that you’ve already started on establishing the central resource you propose – you just need a place for it to go and a method for gathering/updating the info.  You need a host!

OK, I think this gives you plenty to do.  I have very very little to say about editing/proofreading.  There are a few spots highlighted in yellow that need some proofreading, but really your writing is very polished.  The work you have left to do is mostly about making sure that your reader can tell what you’ve learned and is convinced about the need for the changes you recommend (and also can see that there’s a realistic way to accomplish what you suggest).

I look forward to your next draft!

- Jean

Saturday, March 19

Day Thirty-Four

I worked on the first chapter today. It was slow-going because I had to spend a long time thinking about how I was going to organize the chapter.  I think I found a good solution and I made some progress on actually getting it done. I want to finish up chapter one and get chapter two almost done by Monday night. We'll see what happens!

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Friday, March 18

Day Thirty-Three

I took today off to work on my thesis. It went well. I rewrote mostly all of my Introduction. Now I believe it says more of what I want to say and flows much better. I hope to get a lot of work done tomorrow on the first chapter.

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Sunday, March 13

Day Thirty-Two

Worked on my introduction again today. It's really coming together. I have never felt this confident about my thesis before. Looking forward to the next two weeks : )

Saturday, March 12

Day Thirty-One

Today was my best day ever! Worked very thoughtfully on my introduction. I feel like this was a turning point. It will be downhill from here. I just have to put the time in. Ordered Membership Mystique from Amazon. I need to remember to get Museum News article from the museum library. Write Kristen Denner back.

Thursday, March 10

Day Thirty

Really tried to get myself into gear, wrote one page after work but that was all I could muster.

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Saturday, March 5

Day Twenty-Nine

At the office. Ask Virginia for answers to some more questions? What answers has she come to from SurveyMonkey? do staff members of participating institutions receive NARM benefits automatically, how many people per membership card receive benefits, can a printed logo be used instead of a sticker, and what if expiration dates are not on the members cards.

Go back to Manager surveys when I'm writing what needs to change.
Wrote back to Jean. Skype session to come soon. Do I need to do more research?
Writing rough rough rough chapters that I can go in and polish.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Wednesday, March 2

Day Twenty-Eight

Today I worked on writing a bit about who runs these programs.

Tuesday, March 1

Day Twenty-Seven

Today I wrote a bit about cards/stickers and how many people are let in.

Sunday, February 27, 2011

Sunday, February 27

Day Twenty-Six

It's one week since my last post. I was supposed to have completed Chapter One this week. I didn't. In fact, I didn't really work on anything this week. Major FAIL. Now I need to revise my schedule and break it down into smaller chunks because saying I need to write a chapter per week is too overwhelming. Yesterday I had big plans to get stuff done, but I did nothing. Today I dragged myself into the office.  I need to write Jean back from a few days ago and revise my schedule into tiny bite size pieces so I can stay on track.

Monday, February 21, 2011

Sunday, February 20

Day Twenty-Five

Today is Day 25. The first day of my second power run. I want to be finished on Monday, March 21 so I will have one week to edit. That means I have exactly 31 days to write my first draft. Let's get it started!

I need a plan:

The week of 2/20 (ten pages): Chapter One: RMP Models: Organized by type, location. Open to any one, one to one, different rules, different stickers.

The week of 2/28 (ten pages): Chapter Two: What people screw up: Websites not updated, name of program, people allowed in, who participates, number of participating museums. Why are they screwing this up? How is info disseminated?

The week of 3/7 (ten pages):Chapter Three: What to improve: central source of information like ASTC, awareness day, central forum for questions. What other questions could be answered.

The week of 3/14: Introduction and Conclusion

The week of 3/21: Footnotes, editing, formatting

Today I put together the Quick Guide. It's 41 pages long!

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Thursday, February 17

Day Twenty-Four

Today I worked on the Value section of my thesis. Two pages! It's not perfect, but I'll take it. Glad I worked on it after I got home from work. Got an email through to the Whitney. The woman said she would reply when she gets back from vacation early to mid March. I wish it were sooner, but I can work with that. Didn't get much info from Museums West, but oh well. I have one person who agreed to be on panel for the conference. I need one more by Friday. No problem!

Monday, February 14, 2011

Monday, February 14

Day Twenty-Three

I emailed the Museums West manager, posed the reciprocal question to the listserv so I can try to find panelists, tried to email Whitney but it got sent back, emailed Jean to try to find out the answer to some of my questions. These were all very good steps! Tonight I will try to write something :)

Wrote my thesis statement. Not much else. Don't know where to start or how to cite my survey data.

Saturday, February 12

Day Twenty-Two

I got the Turabian book yesterday. I read it while at jury duty. It didn't have all the answers I hoped it would have, specifically--can you use "I" and how to quote the info I collected in my surveys. Today I am making a list of stuff I still need to do and getting started on writing! I also set up my thesis template so I'll have the right formatting.

Monday, February 7, 2011

Sunday, February 6

Day Twenty-One

Today I did the Museums West program, read the thesis guidelines, ordered a Chicago manual, and did wrote some emails.

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Saturday, Februay 5

Day Twenty

Today I did the whole Empire program-start to finish : )

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Sunday, January 30

Day Nineteen

Today I am working on some more things that I listed the other day as being incomplete.  Still letting lots of ideas perculate about creating a website and an "awareness day." Looking forward to tomorrow when my boss Katie will speak with her boss Beth about me submitting a proposal for the AMMC conference.

Saturday, January 29

Day Eighteen

Today I got myself through my rough patch by settling in and taking my time to do the mundane task of checking every museum's list of participating museums. I made myself cozy on the couch with a blanket and my laptop, turned on Food Network, and sat there all day comparing lists against each other. I got it all done! I just had to readjust my working style--sitting at the table and plowing through it was driving me nuts, but getting cozy on the couch made it much easier!

Friday, January 28, 2011

Friday, January 28

Day Seventeen

I had A LOT of ideas last night: website, awareness day, conference proposal.

Today, I got the ball rolling on the conference proposal by bringing it up with my boss.  It would be due 2/15 for the AMMC Conference held here this October.

Here’s a quick list of topics I could cover in the session:
What do museums gain by participating in reciprocal membership programs?
What are the different types of programs (i.e. one-to-one versus nationwide)? What programs are out there? (Name, size, rules and requirements, how to join)
Now that we know the basics (a.k.a. now that my thesis is out) what other questions should we be asking and how can we work together as a museum community to find the answers?
We should be asking questions such as: How can we ensure everyone has the most up-to-date information? How can we capitalize on them? Are they an effective upgrade tool? What should we do with the data we track? How can we best market the programs to our members as a benefit to use and/or upgrade for (on-site materials, website, incorporating it into fulfillment package)?
Q and A with the people who run these programs

List of questions I need to answer before I set to work on the proposal…

Should I be “Caitlin the Grad Student” or “Caitlin the Communications Coordinator at the PMA”? (I think there would be a lot of benefit to being from the PMA)
If I am a presenter, do I need to pay the full conference fee? If I do have to pay, would the museum cover it?
There is only room for 2 confirmed presenters (besides me) on the proposal. Does this mean most sessions only have a total of 3 presenters or are panels usually larger?
How does the proposal process work? What other deadlines would there be down the line?
Then, of course, would people be interested and can I get two people to commit to this.

Here are my thoughts on who I could ask to be on the panel:

1.       North American Reciprocal Membership
Yes! I must have her.
2.       Southeastern Reciprocal Membership
Maybe- he answered the survey and was really nice, but does he round out the panel?
3.       Art Museum Reciprocal Membership Program (AIC)
Didn’t answer the survey, but she is nice and may agree.
4.       Art Museum Reciprocal Network (Walters)
No, didn’t respond to the survey and seems unorganized.
5.       Metropolitan Museum of Art
No, wouldn’t round out the panel.
6.       Whitney
Haven’t contacted them yet, but they’d be a great addition to the panel because it’s a new program and different from the others.
7.       Museum Alliance Reciprocal Program
Said she would respond but never did, could contact her again if need be.
8.       Western Museums Reciprocal Membership/Group
No one runs it.
9.       Western Reciprocal Program/Alliance
Didn’t respond.
10.   ModCon Museum Reciprocal Membership Program
May be good to round out panel, but never responded.
11.   University Museum Reciprocal Program
Too nichey, not good for panel.
12.   Connections
Too nichey, not good for panel.
13.   Ohio Museum Reciprocal Membership Program
Small and local, may be perfect for my panel.
14.   Texas Museum Reciprocal Program
Didn’t hear back.
15.   Empire State Museum Reciprocal Program
Didn’t hear back.
16.   Michigan Art Museums Reciprocal Membership Program
This is UMMA, didn’t hear back.
17.   New England Regional Art Museums
No one person runs it.
18.   Fairfield/Westchester Museum Alliance
No one person runs it, perhaps ask one of the respondents. Interesting example.
19.   Museums West
Not good example.
20.   Other
There will be other kinds of museums, besides art museums, but oh well. I can’t do it all!

Day Sixteen

SNOW DAY!

To be honest, I've hit a bit of a rough patch.  The problem is I haven't filled out 100% of the form for some of these programs.  I've skipped the annoying parts.  There are two:

1. At each museum's website, I look to see if they have provided a list of museums that participate in the program I researching.  Then I print out each list I find and compare them to one another.  This is time consuming, and at times very tedious and confusing, because I will have many lists for each program that I need to compare.
2. I analyze how each museum is using the conjunction with other programs.  Are they only a part of this one program?  Do they offer it in conjunction with other programs? What about NARM? Do they offer all programs at one level or do they spread them out across price points? This is hard because sometimes it's not clear what programs the museum participates in and what levels they are offered at.

My first question to myself is how am I going to use this information when I actually start writing my thesis.  Do I need to be so detailed and specific?? Am I going to say... "This museum left out these four museums on their list. Then the second four museums left off these two museums." Probably not, right? But I guess it's better to be very specific and detailed in my research and then be more general in the paper, i.e. "The three museums most commonly left off the list of participating museums were X and Y."

So today I am taking a step back and looking at what I've done so far and making a list of what holes I've left that I need to fill in.  Having this list will help me focus on the parts that still need to get done.

These are the areas I am going to look at:
  1. What forms are not 100% filled out and what holes do I need to fill?
  2. What forms have I not started?
  3. What samples do I still need to request?
  4. What questions do I need to work on clarifiying?
  5. Also, I need to change all files to be compatible with 2003-2007 so I can open them on my work computer when needed.
The goal is to finish up this phase ASAP so I can meet with Anne Keith Kennedy and get going on the next phase: ACTUALLY PUTTING ALL THIS INFORMATION TOGETHER IN A COHESIVE THESIS!

1.       North American Reciprocal Membership

Haven’t begun this form.  How should I tackle it? I sent surveys to roughly 385 museums that are part of this program and I received 93 surveys back. I think I will just analyze the response I received and not talk about the people who didn’t respond. 93 should be a big enough cross section to relate to the whole.

2.       Southeastern Reciprocal Membership

I didn’t finish comparing SERM lists. I need to obtain a sample. Maxi didn’t respond to me. Asked for another sample from Tracy.

3.       Art Museum Reciprocal Membership Program (AIC)

Should I provide another sample besides the PMA? I asked for one from DIA, but didn’t hear back.

4.       Art Museum Reciprocal Network (Walters)

Contact person, How many responded to the survey, how many of those only participated in Walters, who gets left off the list, summary of location, does everyone follow the rules, price points, how is the program used, inconsistencies to be clarified. I need a sample. I have ours, but I should ask for another one.

5.       Metropolitan Museum of Art

Form complete.  Need another sample, asked DIA.

6.       Whitney

Haven’t done form. I need to initiate contact with them.

7.       Museum Alliance Reciprocal Program

What museums get left off the list, sample, summary of price points, does everyone follow the rules, how is the program used, inconsistencies to be clarified

8.       Western Museums Reciprocal Membership/Group

This is the program that’s dying, so I did the best I could.

9.       Western Reciprocal Program/Alliance

Form complete, but I need to get a sample. Requested but didn’t receive.

10.   ModCon Museum Reciprocal Membership Program

Who gets left off the list, ask for sample, do people follow the rules, inconsistencies to be clarified

11.   University Museum Reciprocal Program

Lots to finish here. Asked manager for survey again.

12.   Connections

Contact person, who gets left off the list, rules?, they don’t do anything special so I don’t need a sample, does everyone follow the rules, how is the program used, inconsistencies to be clarified.

13.   Ohio Museum Reciprocal Membership Program

Complete. Who gets left off the list, only program manager responded

14.   Texas Museum Reciprocal Program

Done, and got sample from McNay

15.   Empire State Museum Reciprocal Program

Haven’t started form yet.

16.   Michigan Art Museums Reciprocal Membership Program

Got sample from Dennos

17.   New England Regional Art Museums

Complete.

18.   Fairfield/Westchester Museum Alliance

Complete.

19.   Museums West

Haven’t begun.

20.   Other

Just need to list them: Time Travelers, ASTC, AHS, Children’s, Jewish

I need to print out: Walters, Museum Alliance, and Connections. I need to re-do ModCon because I don't think I have the lists for that program.

Day Fifteen

Happy birthday shoutout to Ms. Laura Keegan.

Worked on Walters program today. Still have some details to finish up. But I'm getting there!

Day Fourteen

Leaving the biggest one to last... NARM.
But tackling the secong biggest one today- Museum Alliance with 32 participating museums.

Are museums moving towards the one to one model so they have more control? SFMOMA says"We are one of the largest institutions in our current reciprocal program. We are interested in the idea of the Whitney model, where we set up independent 1:1 reciprocal relationships with other museums that are closer to our size/interest. We would need to decide if we have the bandwidth to support the additional administrative workload that this would entail."

Day Thirteen

Settling into a long winter's weekend of thesis-ing...

Today I am tackling the mysterious Fairfield/Westchester Museum Alliance. Haven't paid much attention to it in the past, but finally enough people have mentioned it to attract my attention. It's a well organized alliance, but it doesn't fit the typical definition of reciprocal member program. In this instance, if you visit one of the other museums in the same day you get half price.

Day Twelve

Trying to remember how much I've done so far, and not pay attention to how much I still have left to do. Sigh.

Started and finished looking at New England Consortium.

To be continued...
Fairfield/Westchester Museum Alliance: The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, and Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, Katonah Museum of Art in Katonah, Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, and Wave Hill Gardens and Cultural Center in the Bronx, New York. Day Eleven

Happy MLK Day! Glad to have the day off to work on my thesis.

Yesterday and today I have been working on aspects I've been putting off.  I have gone back to the programs I already looked at and put all the info in the form so I am more organized and know that I've answered all the questions I need to.  The hardest question to answer is who get's left off who's list.
